It's a new year and a time when many take inventory of their life. Do you have any resolutions? Do you have a goal of better health? I hope so! If not, read further for trouble-free suggestions.

When it comes to well being, consider a three-legged approach. Think about your fitness, nutrition, and emotional welfare. How are you managing these vital areas of your life?

You already know how exercising will help you feel better, have more energy, and even help you live longer. But keeping fit can also ward off chronic diseases, improve self-confidence (lifting weights is phenomenal for that), and improve your mood by increasing endorphins — the feel-good hormones. If you are not moving routinely, what's holding you back? Is it possible for you to take about 1/48 of your day to work out? That's really all it takes!

Simply carve out time in your calendar. That's right: put yourself in your own calendar. Make it consistent and daily. Find a walking buddy, join a gym that has classes, or my favorite — turn on some dance music and boogie when no one is around! Whatever you choose, the main goal is to move all the joints in your body, in every direction they were intended, and get your heart rate up. You'll find you'll be better for your patients, and others, by taking care of yourself first! Go ahead — just do it!

Ideally, you should exercise at least four times a week, and six would be even better. Getting started is the key. It's a challenge to take that much time for yourself; however, this has to become a non-negotiable area and the strongest of the three legs of your chair. If being on an elliptical for 30 minutes straight is not practical, then consider two, 15-minute periods of moving. The research shows that total time exercising can reap the same cardiovascular benefits. Organize walks at lunch, or before heading home, walk around the mall — just bring your blinders and leave your wallet at home! Walking is free and easy. You've been doing it for a long time already. You don't even have to learn how!
