I just heard Dr. Oz speak at the Greater NY Dental Meeting! Below are some of the notes I took while listening:
Reminder: People learn best when an emotion is tied to it. With an emotional hook, knowledge makes more sense. Not about facts, but about emotions,
People learn through metaphors.
“Life Curve”
Ascends early in life and stays stable as an adult. Innovation and change should occur before the timeline stabilizes in order for the change to take place.
Health care is a very personal issue.
40% of lives are changed because of medical errors.
Smart Patient Dr. Mehmet Oz
Messages:
- Genes do not drive you.
- 50 years old = 70% of lifestyle-not genes.
- High Blood Pressure-causes holes in blood vessels.
- Ideal BP: 115/75 High BP: 130/85
- Smoking: 20% of 50 year olds still smoke
- Physical activity is vital.
- Stress Reduction/management—
- Add 1 year if you have a social structure to support you.
- Subtract 8 years if you have declared bankruptcy.
Importance of Deep Breathing! Breath in for a count of 5, breath out for a count of 5
Dieting:
Simply reducing 100 calories/day will help reduce 3,000 calories/month.
1 lb of fat takes 3,500 calories to burn.
One less snack per day can be the difference.
It’s the small amount every day that makes the difference.
Dangerous Fat: Omentum/Belly Fat
Your height divided by 2 should be your maximum waist circumference.
Omentum fat:
Squeezes the kidney, which leads to High Blood Pressure
Poisons the liver, which increases LDL cholesterol
Increases leptin, a hormone that signals reduction of appetite.
Stress causes you to eat more.
Cannabinoid system (receptor): causes you to eat more/even when you are not hungry.
Cortisol: The stress hormone. Often fat people have higher levels of cortisol
Biology of Belly Fat:
Ghrelin: “Growling”/Stimulates appetite.
Leptin: blocked by fructose
“You need to nudge the biology of blubber.” Oz
Within ½ hour ghrelin levels fall; therefore, ½ hour before eating have a handful of nuts or apple. That is, reduce ghrelin levels before eating.
Older adults get “old” when the fear fragility.
Stem Cells; Shoelace caps-> telomeres.
Regarding Multivitamins:
Take one in the morning and one in the evening.
Iron: Take if pre-menopausal or under 50.
Vitamin D- 1000 IU’s
Reduces cancer
Reduces heart disease
Prevents thyroid problems
Helps control diabetes
Helps control Multiple Sclerosis
Minerals: Calcium 1200 mg
Magnesium 400 mg with Vitamin D
Omega 3
DHA
ASA-Aspirin—anti-inflammatory
Sleep: Undervalued
Need 7-7.5 hours/night
Women need more than men.
Melatonin: Turn off electronics at least 45 minutes before going to bed as melatonin levels rise with light.
